Membership Message

With Summer in full swing, I would like to personally thank all our Dispatchers and Paramedics for their continued support and dedication in helping staff our ambulances throughout our province.

I know with our call volume back up to the pre-pandemic levels and members trying to take vacation when they can, many members are helping fill the void.

Mental Health

Throughout this pandemic, we have witnessed many different levels of physical and mental stressors, and as professionals we have always put others first and ourselves second. I encourage you all to take time for yourselves to unwind and recharge. I also ask if you ever feel the need to reach out to a friend, family member, this executive or myself for help, then please don’t hesitate to do so.

Postings

During the last round of postings, it was brought to the local’s attention that the North region was not sent the notification e-mail on July 9th of the current provincial job postings.

The cause of the error is still being investigated by the employer, but they currently believe it is an error within the e-mail system.

Our local was able to work with the employer to come to an agreement to help resolve the issue for the North region members on the current posting. The Executive and the employer felt reposting to the North would be the best option to allow members to move into their positions on September 3rd. The time needed to repost and award a provincial posting could not be completed within under 4 weeks.

As a reminder, the current job cycle is every 8 weeks with the next provincial postings going up on Thursday, September 3rd, 2020.

New Station VP’s

The local has posted two Expression of Interests for the position of Station Vice-president.

Those Expression of Interests have since closed and the positions have been awarded.

I want to thank the past Station Vice-presidents for their time and effort they gave in representing their station. I have had the pleasure of meeting each of you and know the dedication you have for the wellbeing of the members you represented and served. Welcome all new and returning members.

To the new and re-elected Station VP’s, I welcome you on board. Although our local may be heading in unchartered waters during this next 2-year term, we must remain consistent on representing the members of Local 4848 until we no longer have the authority to do so.

Work of the Executive

With the pandemic recovery plan in phase yellow, CUPE as well as other organizations, are beginning to open and return to a slightly “New” normal. CUPE has put together a comprehensive plan that is now allowing face-to-face meetings. This can only happen if the conditions are met and based on the current Public Health and Work Safe guidelines.

The Executive Board had its first face-to-face meeting in Fredericton on August 4th and 5th. It was 2 full days of business.

Annual General Convention

With the pandemic, the Executive made the decision to postpone the Annual General Convention (AGC). This was based on the orders of Public Health and the Province.  Where things have been relaxed and a venue has been secured that can provide social distancing and all other requirements, we have decided to hold our AGC in October. Please bear with us as we work through the details to ensure everyone’s safety. As more information is available, it will be released.

The tentative dates: October 6th -8th, 2020 to be held in Fredericton.

With the low numbers of COVID-19 cases in the Atlantic bubble, we are hoping we can accomplish this goal. However, these plans may change or be cancelled at any time.

The AGC is open to all members of Local 4848.  With the current venue we are looking at, we will be limited to how many people may attend. On-line registration will be made available on a first come first serve basis until we have reached our maximum number. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

If you are unable to attend, I would suggest having a conversation with your station VP and have them bring your comments forward.

By-law proposal changes are to be submitted no later than September 15th, 2020 if you would like them to be considered at the 2020 AGC.

Communication

This executive continues to be as open and transparent as possible to the membership.

Over the years, some members have opted out of receiving the local’s communications. If you are not getting any communication, please double check your account. The executive is trying to do better in this regard. When we can release factual information, we will do so.

All items for general release are currently sent out via the following methods:

  • Mass e-mail
  • cupe.ca website
  • CUPE SCFP 4848 Facebook page

We will also be asking your station VP to post it on our Union boards at the station.

Questions/Concerns

Should you have any questions or concerns you need addressed, please reach out to your station VP, Regional President or myself. We will try our best to respond to you in a timely manner but understand that some requests may take a little longer to get you the correct response.

Thanks again for helping this province day in and day out.

Respectfully,

Andrew McLean
President, Local 4848
